From Scratch - Vsha THR

I'll tell you a story of a woman who started from scratch, who went through life as it is and rose above it all. Most people know her as Vsha, she used to be a producer at THR Raaga. This is the story before that, how she got there and what happened after that. Buckle up!

Vsha is from Johor originally, after SPM she came to KL to work as a normal company operator, she used to live with her cousins. After her results came out, she did lower 6 at Center for Indian Excellence (CIE) in KL but before she could complete her upper 6, they closed the place down.

Hence, she had no choice but to go back to where she came from but deep down she always knew she wanted to do something in KL. Like most people in JB, she did not want to work in Singapore, something told her that KL was her destiny instead.

Vsha went in pursuit of her passion. :)

Vsha's heart and mind was set, she came back to KL and worked full time at Sunway Pyramid's TGV Cinemas for 2 whole years. While walking around one day thinking what else to do other than working at TGV, she came across a pamphlet about Stamford College.

Her room mates at that time were a few people from media. They were working at Minnal FM's news department, Vsha always knew she was smitten by their job description. After consulting her room mates, she decided to do Masscom at Stamford College.

Once she quit her job at TGV, she pursued her further studies at Stamford College. After completing her studies, she did internship at Minnal FM for a period of time before joining THR as a road cruiser upon graduating.

She stopped at nothing and kept going.

I'd like to add that Vsha did not have a media background, neither did she know anyone in the field. It's safe to say that she carved a path on her own by finding contacts, building network and making a way when there was absolutely none.

Sure, easier said than done but she created an opportunity for herself and grabbed each one of the opportunities as it presented itself. There were times when she doubted herself, almost gave up but she pushed through those moments with a positive attitude and mindset. Her eyes remained on the goal, focused while her mind looked for new ways to go around the curve.

Talking about her struggles, at first, she had crowd phobia, she used to be quiet at the events, being all awkward and afraid of saying the wrong things at the wrong time.

Vsha learned new skills and overcame her fear.
A quiet mouse by nature, she soon evolved into a social butterfly from the experiences of being a road cruiser as she met a lot of new characters, learned from her mistakes and she also got over her stage fright one baby step at a time.

After being a road cruiser for 5 years, she was promoted to become a part time announcer during weekends. Eventually she became a producer for THR Raaga's morning show; Kalakal Kaalai

When she became a producer, she juggled so many things like the show's contents, contests, gifts, she had no choice but to pick up the skill of multitasking as producers are mainly the backbone of a show.

It wasn't easy, she had many sleepless nights, early mornings, busy schedules, hectic lifestyle but she persevered and worked through it relentlessly. The hustle seemed endless but boy, was it worth!

She led a busy life where this was her permanent schedule; she was a producer for weekdays breakfast show, weekend announcer, pitched in to be a road cruiser in times of need, and constantly chased her KPI.

Vsha and her family, a lovely sight.

2015 was the year she decided to get married as her siblings were all happily married and the pressure started to get to her slowly. She has 2 beautiful kids now and has settled in Sabah after marriage. She is currently an influencer and does product reviews.

"Anything is possible, rather than thinking why we cannot get a particular job, try to stand on your own two feet and fight for it. Identify your talent; whether its writing , speaking, acting, etc. Start on your own. Social media is powerful, make use of it." -Vsha

For example if photography is your forte, get yourself a camera, approach people, do free shoots first. If they like your work, word of mouth will spread and you can build your own career. Slowly but surely. :)

The most important thing is to get the idea and implement it on your own. Create your own style, don't copy people at any costs. (You may want to take notes)

According to Vsha, she has her own sets of principals to believe in as per listed below (in no particular order):
  • Have your own identity.
  • Trust yourself - don't do things like them, do things like you.
  • Take it as a challenge - prove it.
  • Know your strength.
  • Have a unique thing that you do to differentiate you from your competitor.

If a kid comes running up to Vsha asking her best tip for life, she'd say:
"TRUST IN YOURSELF, you are going to bring you on your journey, you are your identity, if you think you can do it, you will do it."

Even after all these years, she still has a few goals on her checklist mainly to create a new platform for young mothers so that they can learn more about child care. (Stay tuned)...

I sure was smitten by the end of the interview! :)
